I Won $48 in the Colorado Lottery

I Won the Colorado Lottery!

Yep, it’s true; I’m the proud winner of Saturday nights Colorado Lottery-I matched 4 of the 6 numbers. What did I do with my winnings? In my opinion, this tells allot about how we think about money and gives some indicators of future financial success….more later

I was recently reading an article by Budgeting in the Fun Stuff called Top Lottery Myths Debunked. We aren’t going to debunk any myths here but Crystal mentions:

I do play the lotto once in a while and use a few bucks of my fun money to do it. Yep, I know the odds suck and I don’t have any weird luck beliefs, but sometimes I just have a bad day and decide to “buy a buck of hope”, lol.

Join the club Crystal! I too bought a lottery ticket when I was buying some gas-just for grins. I was totally shocked when I actually matched 4 of the 6 numbers and won $48 bucks. The owner of the gas station and I had a good laugh and he asked me what I was going to do with the money-was I going to buy $48 dollars worth of lottery tickets? I told him no, I just wanted to savor winning!

What would you have done? Some, I suspect would have plowed it all right back in, after all, it’s only $48 dollars. What if it were $480, $48,000 or $4,000,000 would your attitude be different?

For me, it comes down to the value of money and my philosophy of always trying to pay myself first. I really enjoyed the win and bought a few personal items just to savor the moment. I’ve seen too many people with the attitude that:

It’s such a small amount-it wont make any difference!

With that attitude you are right-it won’t make any difference. But, if you repeat this scenario thousands of time over your life, and you will; it can make a huge difference. We all have to take that first step towards saving.

Well, what do you think? Is how you spend $48 a good indicator of future financial success?
